DEI Committee Update

Hello, my name is Dr. LaTasha Lewis, and I am a new co-chair of the PCICS DEI committee.  I am an Associate Professor in Pediatrics at UT Health Houston, and I serve as the medical director at the Children’s Heart Institute at Memorial Hermann Children’s Hospital.

I am originally from Huntsville, Alabama and attended the Historically Black Colleges and Universities Tuskegee University for my undergraduate education and Meharry Medical College for my medical degree. I completed a pediatric residency at Riley’s Children Health in Indianapolis, pediatric critical care fellowship at Children’s Hospital of Michigan in Detroit, and a pediatric cardiac intensive care fellowship at the Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh. I also obtained a Women in Leadership certificate from Cornell University.

Family-centered care, diversity, equity, and inclusion have all been my passions throughout my career. I believe all families have a voice and provide insight to the care team. While working in New Orleans, I was an integral part in starting the Louisiana Chapter of Conquering CHD. As a minority myself, I understand and have experienced many of the trials and tribulations that affect minorities as they navigate through the healthcare system trying to get their voices heard. As a physician, I have seen those same issues impact heart families across the United States. So, in 2022, Dr. Shuntae Williams (Heart Mom) and I co-founded Melanin Congenital Heart Society with the purpose of educating the black community about congenital heart disease, providing a support network for black congenital heart disease patients and their families, and collaborating with healthcare providers and organizations to improve healthcare disparities and racial bias that affect black congenital heart disease patients and their families/caregiver. In December, I completed Cornell University’s Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Certificate Program to strengthen my academic knowledge in the field.

I look forward to working with you all over the next two years.
